In April, New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) unveiled a new control center located next to NYISO’s headquarters in Rensselaer County. The 64,000-square-foot facility serves as the primary operations and control center for NYISO, a non-profit that oversees New York’s bulk electricity grid and wholesale electricity markets.
The recently completed $38 million facility features the latest digital monitoring technologies, including Activu large-scale visualization solutions. These high-tech monitoring technologies help identify and track the location of problems during power outages and also enhance grid reliability and security throughout the state. The Activu-powered 2,300 square foot video wall is North America’s largest utility installation. The video wall at NYISO displays graphic representations of New York state’s electric grid. It connects approximately 3,000 power plants, supplying them with live data about system conditions.
